Amicus Brief : Asbestos Case

URGENT PLEASE

Ref.  Wto Asb  2000-06-27 Wto

Sub.  Asbestos Case :  WTO, Faces A Tough Choice  ??

Case No. :  WT / DS / 135
Name : European Communities : Measures affecting Asbestos and Products Containing Asbestos

Dear Sir,

Introduction

There is an “A-la-Carte of Occupational carcinogenic & hazardous industries” which decide our lifestyles. These include Plastics, Metals, Asbestos, Paper, Dyes, Building materials, Rubber, Wood, Fuel, Paints, and many more. !!!

Occupational hazards are not necessarily environmental / ecological hazards!!

And being a potential carcinogen is not necessarily the deciding parameter.

Asbestos is a known and well-studied Occupational Carcinogen only (not an environmental / ecological hazard!)

Public dreads Asbestos and bodies responsible to the Public better dread it too!! ??

WTO may obviously be under the Public Pressure.

Asbestos is primarily used today in Asbestos Cement (Sheets & Pipes) = 90 % and balance in friction materials etc.

Asbestos cement pipes and sheets can play a vital role in the water supply & housing schemes. They are most cost effective, durable, safe and energy efficient.

Available products of ISO standards cost upto 1/3rd of the alternatives namely metals, plastic & concrete. There durability is 3 to 4 times more.

All these alternatives come from highly carcinogenic & hazardous industries.

The choice obviously appears to be tough !!
